5 Life Lessons I Learned From Plants

by | Sep 2, 2020 | Mental Health

I’ve been super into plants lately. Like…wildly, obsessively, turning-my-house-into-a-jungle so. My husband has the patience of a saint (or is thanking his lucky stars that it’s only plants that I’m obsessed with this time) as the house slowly morphs into green.

So what on earth could a plant teach someone? Don’t you just give them a bit of sun, water when you remember and hope for the best? Au Contraire.

Different plants (people) have different needs and each different plant (person) thrives in different circumstances.

If I purchase a fern and a cactus and place them on the same shelf and attempt to water them the same amount, we are going to have problems. Ferns love high humidity and lower light while cacti thrive in dry, hot and bright environments.

If our plants are so picky about their particular needs, why do we think humans would be any less so? I am very much an introvert and require alone time to recharge my batteries, whereas extroverts need time around others to feel refreshed. I work best in quiet environments whereas others enjoy the background noise of a coffee shop. My form of relaxation includes actually doing something, whereas my husband’s form of relaxation is watching television.

If you place a plant or a person in an environment that they are not suited to, they may do okay for a time. But only in the right environment will the plant (person) truly grow and blossom.

Some plants (people) are more high maintenance than others.

What?! It’s true! Some people are easy going spider plants. Some are sensitive, demanding orchids.

Regular maintenance and checkins are necessary.

If you don’t regularly water your plants, remove dead pieces, fertilize and check for pests, your plant will not be able to thrive long term. Same for people! If you do not regularly take care of yourself and reevaluate decisions, there is no way you’ll be able to thrive.

Sh*t happens

No matter how much care you give your plants, some will die. No matter how much you try to prevent it, at some point you will have to fight pests that infest your beautiful plants.

Same in life. No matter how hard you try, some things just won’t work out. No matter how good of a person you try to be, people will still be cruel or dislike you. It’s heartbreaking and frustrating, but it’s also life.

Sometimes you need a little extra help.

Despite having several windows that get pretty great light, earlier this year I purchased some grow lights to give my plants some supplemental light. The differences are massive! New leaves sprout in a matter of days and I never knew plants could grow as quickly as they are!

It’s okay to ask for a little extra help. Sometimes that’s all we really need to grow like we should.

How about you? Have you learned any life lessons from your plants?
